Life in the ASEDS Library
Library News Spring 2008

Kindergarten classes:
We will be reading books and doing activities that deal with rainbows, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, Spring, Summer, flowers, and lots more!

Grade 1:
We are reading many of the 2007-2008 South Carolina Picture Book Award nominees and working on related activities. We will also work more on alphabetizing authors’ last names.

Grade 2:
We are doing an author study of Patricia Polacco. We will also continue to work on library skills such as alphabetizing, understanding the difference between fiction and nonfiction.

Grade 3:
We are working hard to learn how to use the online catalog to locate books in the library. We will look at a variety of book covers to discover the different types of information found there. We will make our own book covers, too.

Grade 4:
We are finishing our “Wickedly Whimsical” dictionaries and will then work with almanacs and atlases. We will also take time to choose books and read them to the kindergarten classes.

Grade 5:
We are using the atlas, DISCUS, and a few other websites to learn about third world countries. We will also work on a Trivia game to review various resources available in the library.

Grade 6:
We are writing children’s stories about various civil rights leaders from around the world. We will read them to the second and third grade classes when we have completed them. We will then work on our tour guides of Washington, D.C. in preparation for our trip.

Grades 1-6: FINAL ACTIVITY
We will take time at the end of the year to review and recommend our favorite books from the year to the rising classes. These recommendations will be placed in the notebooks that stay in the library for student use.

Accelerated Reader:
Barnes and Noble now has a copy of our test list.

Birthday Book Club:
February 28, 2008: February-April Birthdays
April 8, 2008: May-July Birthdays

Important Notes about Accelerated Reader and the Library:
1.      The list on the ASEDS web site is 3 years old. We are unable to update it at this time due to technical issues. A complete list of tests is available in the main office for copying. The complete list is also available at Books-a-million, the Florence County Public Library (main branch), and the Darlington County Public Library (main branch).

2.     Because Accelerated Reader tests ARE NOT taken in the library during the regular school year, all questions and concerns about students’ AR records, testing, etc., should be discussed with the homeroom/language arts teachers, not the librarian.

3.     While All Saints’ makes every effort to have a wide variety of books and AR tests available, there will certainly be books and tests that we do not have. Parents have the option to purchase individual AR tests if they so choose. Forms and contact information are available in the main office.
